Milano, Ciao

Went to see a Man About A Horse

Our flights lately have been delayed, this one is also, with any luck we will be only a little delayed, had plenty of time to shop and saw a interesting cafe called the Tea Rex, how special is that.

We rose out of the foggy skies of London and landed in sunshine at Milano. It was so good to see the sun. I have forgotten how nice it is to wake up everyday to sunshine. The weather has been beautiful, hot but beautiful.

We had a beautiful flat in Centro Storico. Walking distance to many of the main attractions and easy access to the metro and buses. The view was incredible, We were on the 13th floor and could see the Duomo out all the windows, with sunsets to die for.

We walked all over the city and saw so many fountains, statues and many many horses. One of my goals was to see the Da Vinci Horse, one similar to the horse in the Meiger Gardens in Grand Rapids but bigger. It seemed we could not pass a square without another horse in the middle of it.

The main square was spectacular with the Duomo, Vittorio, and many ancient buildings. We managed to climb to the top of the Duomo, 251 steps. My knees were killing me but the view was worth it. The spires were incredible close up. The Duomo had more than 3500 statues, and more spires than you can count, this does not even include the bas-reliefs carved all over it. It even had the Statue of Liberty before we had the US had the Statue of Liberty right above the main door way to the duomo.

We had a classic Italian give us a 4 hour tour of the the not so noticeable iconic churches, buildings , opera house the first day we were in town so we could sort out what we wanted to see more of.

We went inside the church of skulls which until you looked close up at the walls you really did not think there was anything to unique about it. Then it hit you the walls are made of skeletons. Pretty macabre.

The tour ended in front of the stock exchange with the statue saying what we all think wall street is doing to the general public. Couldn’t believe it.

As we continued walking around the city more and more horse statues were everywhere. Then we came along the horse racing field and the wall along the outside was full of graffiti for as long as the eye could see. And many of the paintings were of horses. The horse seems pretty popular in Milan.

The days were pretty hot, drank lots of water and never had to go to the bathroom. There were many outside cafes and i was drinking ice cream coffees with a little Baileys in them. Made my feet feel so much better.

We did manage to fit in some work and had a great dinner by the canals. The restaurant was outside gardens with the top covered in vineyards. Lots of grapes over head and every now and then an ant would makes its way on to the table, yummy more protein.

The dinner was a classic Italian 5 course marathon. Vegetables and humus, bread, risotto, sea bass with out the eye balls, and a plate full of ice cream, cheese cake, strawberries to die for, finishing it off with guppo and expresso. I was never going to be able to move again.

After dinner we strolled down the canals to walk off some of the dinner. Beautiful evening.

As we got off the metro to come home we knew we were in the right place when we saw the T-Rex Lego model, that was kind of our land mark to get home.

There was also a spectacular Lego replica for the duomo, incredible.

When we got home the view from the flat was a half moon rising over the Duomo.

We toured enough churches, Baptistries, castles that I was ready to move on.

We found the horse to end all horses. It was grand and well worth the hike it took to get there.

We spent Kirk’s birthday eating spaghetti and going to the La Scala Theatro. Had lunch at a La Magenta’s, never had spaghetti that tasted so good, went to the Theatro, then had spaghetti again to finish off the night. wonderful way to end our trip to Milan

                                                                                   Arrivederci!
